CS 5764: Information Visualization

In-Class Paper Presentations

During the semester, individual students will give a presentation in class on one of the assigned readings.  The presentation should be no more than 15 minutes long.  Presentations on visualization papers should cover:

• the problem they are trying to solve, type of information visualized.  (briefly)
• data->visual mapping
• example using live demo, pictures, or video (search the web for materials)
• strengths and weaknesses critique;  e.g. scale, user tasks, comparison with other tools, insight.
• for empirical experiments include:  independent and dependent variables, results.

The goals of the presentation are:

• to ensure the class understands the visualization,
• to spark class discussion on strengths and weaknesses.

Tips:

• Time is short.  15 minutes = 6 slides plus demo.  Practice out load to gauge length.
• Use pictures, pictures, pictures.  Limited use of text, to hammer home key points.
• Get to the demo quickly, try to put the demo nearer the beginning of the presentation.
• What is the take home message?   2-3 main points.
• Conclude with controversy, provoke interactive discussion.

Bring PowerPoint slides to class on a laptop or USB drive.  If needed, setup demos or large materials on my laptop the day before.
