Tradeoff: Interruption vs. Comprehension for public displays.
Public displays with low detail notifications are unobtrusive but do not provide much information.
Public displays with detailed notifications are interruptive but do provide a lot of information.
Public Displays as PDA's
Public displays can allow user interaction to display personal information usually stored in PDA's.
If public displays were everywhere, people may not need to carry PDA's with them.
Raises privacy issues. Could we design them such that privacy would not be an issue anymore?
Notifications on Large Screen Displays
The screen is larger than what can be seen in the focal region. This means the user isn't constantly aware of what is being displayed on the entire screen all the time. How do we attract users' attention to information that is outside the visual scope?
Notification in the Field of View:
Maintain awareness by attracting attention to the peripheral region which now becomes the focal area.
Visual Notifications
Animation - Motion
Audible Notifications:
Spatial sounds
Notification outside the Field of View:
Maintain awareness by attracting attention to the peripheral region which now becomes the focal area.
Audible Notifications:
Spatial sounds
Haptic/Tactile
Temporarily display peripheral information in the users’ focus region.
Coordination of Interruption
Immediate - user interrupted as soon as monitored (peripheral) information changes
Negotiated - user interrupted on demand. User chooses when to be interrupted.
Mediated - user interrupted at appropriate time as estimated by the system.
Scheduled - user interrupted at regular time intervals.
