 ArcJmp

Description:

The ArcJmp software provides an interactive link between ESRI ArcView maps and SAS JMP statistical analysis and data visualization software.  This gives analysts a remarkable new ability to analyze census data from both a geographic and statistical perspective.  For example, combining maps and statistical data plots may reveal interesting data trends in demographics.

Scenario:

Below are distribution plots of county summary data showing percent population black, percent population with college degree, income per capita, and median rent, and a map showing percent farmland.  Selecting the counties with high percentages of blacks in the distribution reveals that those counties are clustered in the South region (light highlights in map) and generally have lower education, income, and rent (dark green in distribution plots).

This prompts us to examine the entire South region in general.  Selecting the entire South on the map reveals that those counties are generally in the lower portion of the distribution curves for education, income, and rent (dark green in distribution plots).

Installation instructions:

  1. System Requirements:  PC, Windows.
  2. Install SAS JMP 4.0 or better on your system. JMP-In (the light version of JMP) will not work.
Census personnel: JMP is available for free at the Census software office.
For more information:  The SAS JMP web site.
  3. Download the ESRI MapObjects2.1 installer (MO21_Only_Eval.EXE) and run it.  This will install a 90-day evaluation version of MapObjects2.1 on your system.  Since it is an evaluation version, it will display a "nag" notice when you start up ArcJmp, and will stop functioning after 90 days.  If you still need additional time to try the software, uninstall it using 'Start | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs', then download and re-install it again.
For more information:  The ESRI MapObjects2.1 web site.
  4. Download the ArcJmp installer and run it.  This will unzip 3 temporary files into a folder of you choosing.  Choose a temporary location such as Desktop.
  5. Run the setup.exe file that was unzipped into your chosen temporary location.  This will install the ArcJmp application on your system.
  6. You may now delete the installers that you downloaded in steps 3 and 4, and delete the temporary files unzipped in step 4.
  7. Run ArcJmp from the Start menu:  'Start | Programs | ArcJmp'.
